Gerd Leonhard’s vision is of a music industry which earns its fees via a needletime like model, a fee charged at access to the network (i.e. the telco). His projections are of a E26 Billion marke for music would make EMI execs rejoice. I am not convinced that the Telcos are the answer (though its an interesting argument). On the one hand networks are trying to move away from becoming dumb pipes – and so a partnership with music and video content makes perfect sense. on the other hand, the music industry generally cannot agree on anything, making it hard to develop a congruent business model. the biggest threat is the change in licensing structures – which would reduce the backlog revenues.
