the increase in competition has definately knocked newspapers – but we know this. whats interesting in this article is that murdoch and his key execs saw electronic publishing as a good thing, and they are now wrining their hands in agony.
how do you survive in a boom model with a scarcity model? MS figured it out but had a ton of piracy (often promoted i am sure) for a long time. once the market matured and tehir distribution channels saw benefit in OEM deals – it became a de facto experience.
so many non-nedia companies are now media companies, while media companies stay just that – media companies… so that aint a great thing as it means more competitors, with a different revenue stream and business model competing for the same thing.
